What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a scheme created by Australia to help people who suffer with disability fund their medical costs. To check if you are eligible, head over to the NDIS government website to see if you meet the eligibility criteria. You will need your certified psychologist to fill out evidence of psychological disability form, and apply online.

What does the NDIS do?

For a brief overview, NDIS focuses on permanent and significant disabilities. For ‘permanent’, this means that the disability is likely to be lifelong, while ‘significant’ refers to it is having a substantial impact on your ability to complete everyday tasks. The NDIS helps people who require assistance or products to aid them in living their daily life.

One of the key factors the NDIA focuses on is early intervention and continuing support. Which is what counselling can help you with. Along with counselling, there is additional support provided as early as possible to reduce the long-term impacts of their disability. Since unfortunately, most of these psychological disabilities do last a lifetime. Some of the supports that are funded by the scheme include transport within the community, workplace help, therapeutic support such as counselling, helping household tasks, vehicle modification, and mobility equipment. For the full list, check out the official website here.

How do you qualify for NDIS?

One of the ways to qualify to NDIS is if you are suffering from a psychological disability. A psychological disability describes a disability that arises from a mental health issue. If you suffer from mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or isolation, there is a chance you experience a psychological disability. To get properly accessed, you will need your clinician to fill out an Evidence of Psychosocial Disability Form.

How does NDIS assist recovery?

The purpose of NDIS is to assist you to work towards recovery. The NDIS definition of recovery is achieving an optimal state of personal, social and emotional wellbeing. The scheme is created to fund supports that assist you to live an ordinary and happy life. Recovery looks different for everyone and requires continual and consistent work.
